A short but frustratingly inadequate letter from the English orator and statesman John Bright (1811-1889) to the distinguished Massachusetts lawyer and Bussey professor of law at Harvard Law School, Emory Washburn (1800-1877). Bright acknowledges receipt of "the little volume" and observes that "the subject is one of great importance, & anything upon it from your country will have considerable influence in this. I confess", he continues, "I am not as sanguine as many persons here as to the results of the cooperative principle. The subject however is one so extensive that it cannot be dealt with in a letter ......".
