The Rev. William Marsh M.A. (1775-1864) was vicar of St. Peter's Colchester. His sermon actually comprises only pp.13-35 of the present volume, the greater part listing subscribers (pp. 43-61) and factual descriptions of the Society's objectives and achievements, together with testimonial letters from teachers and others across the country. The Society claimed, inter alia, to have educated at least 400,000 scholars and given away some 436,297 spelling-books.
