James Merrick (1720-1769), a biblical and classical scholar, lived for the greatest part of his relatively short adult life in Reading where he interested himself in scholarly study and philanthropic endeavour. He devoted himself, for example, to the welfare of those in the debtors' prison and "took much notice of the soldiers in the garrison at Reading". [J.R. Watson in ODNB].
