The North Georgia Gazette, and Winter Chronicle.

SABINE, Edward Editor,, The North Georgia Gazette, and Winter Chronicle. London: John Murray. 1821.

4to., xii + 132pp., including the half-title, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, neatly rebacked with the original label re-used, some page crinkling, minor wear to binding, but still a very good copy.

A weekly newspaper, complete in 21 issues, edited by Edward Sabine and written by members of the first Parry expedition (1819-1820) while at their winter quarters at Winter Harbour on Melville Island. It was circulated among the men in manuscript and, upon their return to England, was published by Murray. The magazine includes jokes, poems, stories and thinly disguised gossip. 'As the design of this paper is solely to promote good-humour and amusement, Captain Sabine ..... will consider himself responsible, that no article whatsoever shall be admitted which, to his knowledge, will give a moment's uneasiness to any individual. .....'. The newspaper was simply intended to enliven the tedious and inactive months of winter'.
