An interesting record of dispute management between the local authority [viz. Rochester Town Clerk] and the locally important Company of Free Dredgers of the Oyster Fishery in the River Medway. The 'divers disputes controversies and differences [which] have arisen and are now subsisting' were here settled through the adjudication of John Hinde of Milton near Sittingbourne in the county of Kent gentleman. The oyster fishermen are here all named. All of the dredgermen, who lived variously in Rochester, Stroud and Chatham, were challenging the 'fees and emoluments due' to John Nicholson, the Rochester town clerk and solicitor. In the event, the dredgerman lost the case and were compelled to pay 124-19-3 'in full satisfaction and discharge'.
